"Watches"

Lamentations 2:19
'Arise, cry out in the night, as the watches of the night begin; pour out your heart like water
in the presence of the Lord. Lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint from hunger at every street corner.'

Judges 7:19
'Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands.'

Exodus 14:24
'During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion.'




This functional art piece is inspired by these verses.

In the Old Testament, the night was divided into three watches, spanning from sunset to sunrise, with each watch lasting four hours. The Bible does not provide specific details on how these watches were timed, so further research may be necessary for more clarity. The positions of the moon and stars were likely one of the methods used. Other possible methods include a water clock. During the day, a sundial was likely employed to keep time.

 This particular item was made from scrap metal salvaged from a junkyard.
