"stauros"

And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Markus 8:34

"Stauros" is the Greek word for "cross," with the Strong's number G4716. It appears 28 times in 28 verses in the KJV version of the Bible. According to Larry Pierce's online Bible, the word is defined as follows:

1. A well-known instrument of the most cruel and humiliating punishment, borrowed by the Greeks and Romans from the Phoenicians. The Romans used the stauros to execute the most guilty criminals, particularly the basest slaves, robbers, and those who instigated uprisings. Occasionally, even innocent and peaceable individuals, along with Roman citizens, were subjected to this punishment at the discretion of the governors.

2. The crucifixion that Christ endured.

3. An upright "stake," especially one that is pointed, used in fences or palisades.

The cross has become Christianity's most prominent symbol, displayed in countless formats throughout history. We have chosen the above verse from the 28 references because it reminds us that, as followers of Jesus, we must sacrificially give up many of our own desires and ambitions. We have listed the 28 verses here for easy reference:

About the artwork:
Made from scrap metal pieces retrieved from a junkyard. Most likely, someone used it to practise his welding methods. Subsequently, the pieces were welded together to form the cross and attached to a stand also made from scrap metal.
