The Plumbline

Isaiah 28:17 
I will make justice the measuring line
    and righteousness the plumb line;
hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie,
    and water will overflow your hiding place.



This piece is inspired by Isaiah 28, where the plumb line represents righteousness as a measuring tool in the Lord's hands. Traditionally, craftsmen, masons, and builders have used plumb lines and plumb bobs, the weight, to ensure the accuracy of structures like the walls of buildings.

The Hebrew word translated here for plumb line is מִשְׁקֶלֶת mishqeleth, pronounced mish-keh'-leth; or מִשְׁקֹלֶת mishqôleth. It appears only in two verses in the Old Testament, the other being in 2 Kings 21:13. 
Another Hebrew word with a similar meaning is אֲנָךְ ('ănāḵ). It appears in the book of  Amos 7:7-8. Also, a well-known verse.

More about the artwork:
This piece is crafted from the staves of a wine barrel and scrap metal salvaged from a junkyard. The weight, known as a plumb or plumb bob, was sourced separately and made by the renowned U.S. toolmakers Millers and Falls.
