Praying the News – The Impact of Abuse
The Herald Monday 17 March 2025 – New Book Highlights Prevalent Abuse Among Communities
Background
“Silapha” (We are here). A debut poetry collection by Thandokazi Mayo, published by Imbizo Arts, reflects on the experiences of people living in townships who are subjected to physical, mental, and emotional abuse. One form of abuse that is often overlooked is abandonment by fathers, which is typically treated as a norm. Another troubling expression of love is the normalization of violence; individuals may think that love includes the capacity to inflict harm on one another. The book aims to teach readers that love should be understood as a measure of protection rather than control. Young boys often grow up angry, taught that aggression and dominance are the pathways to success in life.
Prayer Guidelines
Prayer for Healing from Paternal Abandonment
The normalization of fatherly abandonment as a societal norm, causes deep emotional wounds and perpetuates cycles of trauma.
Scripture:
Psalm 68:5 (NIV) – “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.”
Sample Prayer
“Heavenly Father, we lift up all those who have been abandoned by their earthly fathers, feeling the pain of rejection and loss. We pray that You, as the ultimate Father to the fatherless, will fill the void in their hearts with Your unending love and presence. Heal their wounds, restore their sense of worth, and break the cycle of abandonment in their families. Help communities to recognize this pain as abuse, not a norm, and to support those who are hurting. Teach us to be vessels of Your love, offering care and guidance to the fatherless, and may they find strength in Your promise to never leave nor forsake them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Prayer for Young Boys and Breaking Cycles of Toxic Masculinity
Young boys growing up angry, are taught that aggression and dominance are pathways to success, perpetuating harmful cycles of behavior.
Scripture:
Proverbs 22:6 (NIV) – “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
Sample Prayer
“Gracious God, we lift up the young boys in our townships and communities who are growing up under the weight of anger and harmful teachings about masculinity. We pray that You will break the chains of toxic conditioning that teach them aggression and dominance are the paths to success. Instead, guide them in Your ways, teaching them that true strength lies in humility, kindness, and love. Surround them with godly mentors, fathers, and role models who will train them in righteousness, as Your Word instructs. Heal their anger, restore their hearts, and help them grow into men who protect, uplift, and honor others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
