Police seize R1.5m in drugs during Gqeberha operation

Abstract
“Gqeberha police dealt a significant blow to suspected drug dealing activities in the city during “Operation UKUBUZA”, confiscating drugs with an estimated street value of R1.5m in the Central area and arresting three suspects. Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the operation took place on Thursday, at about 11 am. “The operation was conducted after SAPS members received information about suspects allegedly selling drugs in Parliament Street,” Janse van Rensburg said. “The information was immediately operationalised, resulting in the arrests of two men who were [allegedly] found in possession of suspected drugs.”
More Background: Drug-Related Crime in Nelson Mandela Bay
The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported a total of 1,530 drug-related crime cases across 18 precincts in Nelson Mandela Bay from April to June 2026. This marks a 6.8% increase compared to the same period in 2025. These cases account for 42% of the Eastern Cape’s total of 3,679 drug-related incidents during this timeframe. In the latest quarter, from April to June 2026, the breakdown of cases included the Galvandale Precinct, which reported the highest number of incidents at 159. This was followed by Mount Road with 152 cases, Huwewood with 149 cases, and Kariega with 147 cases.

1. The Cooperation Between Police and Community Safety Structures
Let us pray for a genuine and sustained partnership among the South African Police Service (SAPS), metro police, Community Policing Forums (CPFs), neighborhood watches, and local safety initiatives. This collaboration should enable quick information sharing and support operations with the involvement of residents.
We ask for the rebuilding of trust in areas where it has been damaged, so communities feel safe reporting drug-related activities and can work alongside the police rather than in isolation or fear.
Additionally, we pray for coordinated strategies that integrate law enforcement with community-driven prevention efforts. This approach aims to reduce turf wars and protect vulnerable neighborhoods.
2. Role of Public Institutions in Raising Drug Awareness
Pray that schools, clinics, municipalities, and provincial departments actively and consistently educate children, youth, and families about the dangers of drugs, the tactics used by dealers, and healthy alternatives.
Request clear, age-appropriate programs in schools and public spaces that empower young people to resist recruitment and peer pressure.
Pray that public institutions exemplify accountability and transparency, using their platforms to highlight both the human cost of the drug trade and pathways to hope.
3. Implementation of Drug Rehabilitation Programs
Pray for the expansion, adequate funding, and effective operation of accessible rehabilitation centers and aftercare support in the Eastern Cape, particularly in high-need areas like Nelson Mandela Bay.
Request that existing programs receive better resources, be staffed with qualified professionals, and be integrated with social services. This will ensure that individuals seeking recovery receive lasting help instead of just temporary relief. Currently, rehabilitation facilities are very limited.
Pray for a reduction in stigma surrounding addiction, increased family and community support for those in recovery, and a successful reintegration into society that helps break the cycles of dependency and crime.
