Investing in Our Youth: Teaching Self-Worth Before It’s Too Late

Abstract
Across our schools and communities, many young people are facing challenges that threaten their education, wellbeing, and future success. Bullying, drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancies, gangsterism, violence, peer pressure, and a lack of discipline are increasingly common.
Behind these visible problems are often deeper struggles such as emotional trauma, low self-esteem, hopelessness, and a lack of positive role models. As a community of faith, we cannot ignore these realities. The future of our nation depends on the choices our young people make today.
When pupils become trapped in destructive behaviours, the consequences extend far beyond the individual. Families suffer, schools become unsafe, communities weaken, and opportunities for a brighter future are lost.
The Bible reminds us in Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Through the Moral Regeneration Outreach to Schools programme, we seek to restore hope, moral values, discipline, self-worth, and positive decision-making among pupils.
What is the Moral Regeneration Schools Outreach Programme?
The Moral Regeneration Outreach to Schools programme is a faith-based initiative active in the Eastern Cape. It partners with the Eastern Cape Department of Education to address serious social and behavioural challenges facing learners.
Core Purpose
It aims to restore hope, moral values, discipline, self-worth, and positive decision-making. The programme tackles:
- Bullying
- Drug and alcohol abuse
- Teenage pregnancies
- Gangsterism
- Violence and peer pressure
- Lack of discipline
It also addresses deeper issues such as emotional trauma, low self-esteem, and hopelessness.
How It Works
Outreach teams visit schools (prioritising hotspot schools) and engage learners through motivational talks, assemblies, workshops, and interactive discussions. Topics include anti-bullying, anti-drug awareness, anti-gangsterism, gender-based violence prevention, teenage pregnancy prevention, leadership development, respect, and discipline.
Sessions run from Grade R to Grade 12 and combine practical life skills with a Christian foundation.

How to Pray for the Moral Regeneration Programme
1. Continued Funding from the Department of Education
Prayer Point: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the partnership already established. We ask that You continue to grant favour with the Department of Education so that funding for this programme is sustained and increased. Turn the hearts of decision-makers towards this vital work, in Jesus’ name.
Scripture:
“The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord… He turns it wherever He wishes.” (Proverbs 21:1)
“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)
2. More Volunteers to Join the Programme
Prayer Point: Lord, the harvest is great but the labourers are few. Stir the hearts of more believers — pastors, professionals, youth leaders, and marketplace Christians — to volunteer for this outreach. Raise up committed workers who will serve with passion and integrity.
Scripture: “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the labourers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest.” (Matthew 9:37-38)
3. More Schools to Open Their Doors
Prayer Point: Father, open wide doors of opportunity in schools across the Eastern Cape and beyond. Soften the hearts of principals, SGBs, and officials so they welcome the team. Remove resistance and replace it with openness and cooperation.
Scripture:
“Praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word…” (Colossians 4:3)
“I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it.” (Revelation 3:8)
4. Greater Personal Impact on Students
Prayer Point: Lord, may every talk, workshop, and interaction bring lasting transformation. Let each learner encounter hope, discover their God-given worth, and be empowered to make wise choices. May the seeds planted produce good fruit for generations.
Scripture:
“Train up a child in the way he should go…” (Proverbs 22:6)
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you… to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
5. Teachers Also Gain from the Programme
Prayer Point: Gracious God, refresh and strengthen the teachers who carry heavy burdens daily. As the team ministers in schools, let teachers also receive encouragement, wisdom, and renewed purpose.
Scripture:
“And let us not grow weary while doing good…” (Galatians 6:9)
“But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength…” (Isaiah 40:31)
You can pray through these points individually or in a group setting. Adapt them as the Holy Spirit leads.
