Pray for Churches Tackling Poverty

A Practical Way to Help the Unemployed

The Herald — 13 July 2026

Thought for the Day

The church is not called only to pray for the poor — but to become the hands that lift them. When faith and practical action meet, hope is reborn, and poverty loses its grip.

Abstract

The following is an abstract from the weekly Church Column that appears in the Herald every Monday. Written by Pastor Ruben Africa, National Ground Operator for Work 4 A Living.

Have you ever asked yourself, “how can the church really help the poor?” The church is uniquely positioned to address the challenge. As an institution, the church is found everywhere, even in remote places where most other organisations do not exist. And they have physical buildings and other resources which should be used every day, and not just Sundays.

At Work 4 A Living, we form partnerships with churches to help people find employment, start businesses and build brighter futures. For 19 years, Work 4 A Living centres have empowered unemployed people with practical tools to improve their circumstances. Work 4 A Living is now opening its doors to churches, sharing what we have learnt over many years of working with the unemployed.

Why This Makes Sense

Churches offer distinct advantages that make partnerships like this particularly powerful:

How Can We Pray for the Success of This Program?

1. For the Unemployed Participants

Pray that hope and dignity replace despair. Ask God to open their minds and hearts to the training, remove barriers of discouragement, and grant successful job placements or thriving businesses.

2. For the Churches and Their Leaders

Pray that churches embrace this vision, that God raises up gifted leaders and volunteers, and that unity grows among churches across communities.

3. For the Work 4 A Living Team and Trainers

Pray for strength, protection from burnout, godly wisdom, and favour with funders and partners.

4. For Broader Impact and Breakthrough

Pray for transformation beyond jobs — changed lives, stronger families, and churches known as beacons of practical hope.

5. Scriptural Anchors for Prayer

Sample Short Prayer

“Father, thank You for the church’s unique position to love the unemployed. Bless the Work 4 A Living program with Your favour. Equip every participant with skills and hope, empower every partnering church with resources and vision, and let Your Spirit bring breakthrough, dignity, and transformation. May many stories of restored lives bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
