Practical Examples
These examples illustrate how to apply Scripture in everyday situations. Feel free to modify them according to your own favourite verses and circumstances.
1. Work or Career
Productivity Verse: Colossians 3:23-24
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters…”
Action Step:
During my main work block this afternoon, I will turn off notifications, give full attention to the quarterly report (including the tedious parts), and silently pray “I’m doing this for You, Lord” whenever I feel like rushing or cutting corners. I will aim to complete it with the best of my ability as if Jesus were my manager.
Additional Verses:
- Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”
- Ephesians 4:28 – “Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.”
- 2 Thessalonians 3:10-12 – “For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: ‘The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.’ … Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat.”
2. Family, Marriage, Parenting
Home Verse: Ephesians 6:4 and Deuteronomy 6:6-7
“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord… Talk about them when you sit at home…”
Action Step:
At dinner tonight, instead of scrolling on my phone while the kids talk, I will put it away, ask each child one specific question about their day, listen attentively, and share one short truth from today’s Bible simply by reading with them.
Additional Verses:
- Ephesians 5:25 – “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
- Colossians 3:21 – “Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.”
- Proverbs 22:6 – “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
3. Stress, Anxiety & Overwhelm
Verse: Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts…”
Action Step:
When the deadline pressure hits at 11 am today, I will stop for 2 minutes, close my eyes, thank God for three specific things, and pray the situation out loud to Him instead of spiraling into worry or snapping at colleagues. I will then return to the task with His peace as my guard.
Additional Verses:
- Matthew 6:25-27 – “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life… Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”
- 1 Peter 5:7 – “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
- Psalm 55:22 – “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”
4. Finances / Provision
Money Verse: 2 Corinthians 9:7
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
Action Step:
Before paying bills this evening, I will review my budget, identify one small extra amount (e.g., R50 or equivalent), and cheerfully give it online to my church’s outreach fund or a need I noticed this week, trusting God as the ultimate Provider.
Additional Verses:
- Malachi 3:10 – “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse… and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”
- Proverbs 3:9-10 – “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing…”
- Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
5. Commute / Transitions / Waiting
Verse: Psalm 27:14
“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
Action Step:
While stuck in traffic or waiting in the queue today, instead of getting frustrated or mindlessly scrolling, I will turn off the radio/podcast for the first 5 minutes, thank God for His presence, and pray for the people around me (or for my family) using that time as purposeful waiting on Him.
Additional Verses:
- Isaiah 40:31 – “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
- Lamentations 3:25-26 – “The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”
- Psalm 37:7 – “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him…”
6. Technology / Social Media
Phone Verse: Ephesians 4:29 and Philippians 4:8
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up… whatever is true, whatever is noble… think about such things.”
Action Step:
Before opening any social media app today, I will set a 10-minute timer and commit to posting or commenting only what builds others up. If I feel the pull of comparison, I will immediately close the app and thank God for one specific blessing in my own life.
Additional Verses:
- Psalm 101:3 – “I will not look with approval on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do; I will have no part in it.”
- Colossians 3:2 – “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
- James 1:26 – “Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves…”
7. Health / Body
Rest Verse: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit… You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”
Action Step:
This evening, instead of staying up late scrolling or snacking out of tiredness, I will go to bed 30 minutes earlier after a short prayer of thanks, and tomorrow morning I will start the day with a 10-minute walk or simple stretch while listening to worship music, honoring my body as God’s temple.
Additional Verses:
- 1 Timothy 4:8 – “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
- Proverbs 23:20-21 – “Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat…”
- Romans 12:1 – “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”
8. Relationships Outside the Home (neighbors, colleagues, strangers)
Verse: Matthew 22:39 and Luke 10:25-37 – Good Samaritan
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Action Step:
Today, when I see my neighbor/colleague/stranger in need (e.g., someone struggling with groceries or looking stressed at work), I will stop, offer practical help (carry bags, ask how they are, or listen for 2 minutes), and pray silently for them afterward, showing the love of Jesus tangibly.
Additional Verses:
- Galatians 6:10 – “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
- Romans 12:18 – “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
- Proverbs 3:27-28 – “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, ‘Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you’—when you already have it with you.”
9. Decision-Making & Small Choices
Verse: Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Action Step:
Before replying “yes” to the extra meeting request or small purchase I’m considering today, I will pause, pray “Lord, help me not lean on my own understanding,” and only agree if it aligns with wisdom and my current priorities. If unsure, I will say “I’ll pray and get back to you” instead of deciding impulsively.
Additional Verses:
- James 1:5 – “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
- Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
- Psalm 37:5 – “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this…”
10. Gratitude & Joy in the Mundane
Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Action Step:
While doing the repetitive task of folding laundry or washing dishes today, I will name out loud (or in my heart) three specific things I’m thankful for in that moment — the clean clothes, running water, or the roof over my head — and turn the ordinary chore into a short time of worship and joy.
Additional Verses:
- Psalm 118:24 – “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
- Philippians 4:4 – “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”
- Colossians 3:15-17 – “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts… And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly… giving thanks to God the Father for everything…”
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” — James 1:22
