Prayer Guidelines for the Bushmen

These are general guidelines and will help you to prayerfully bring the plight of the Bushmen before the throne of God. Guidelines are formulated in view of the hardships, needs and realities the Bushmen faces daily. The Bushmen seldom wear shoes so let us walk in their footsteps for a moment, and pray for them.
* Alcohol abuse is a serious and growing problem amongst all age and ethnic groups in the Tsumkwe area, as well as in most other Bushmen communities in Southern Africa. One reason for this is the availability of liquor in these communities, even in remote areas. Other reasons include boredom and a very passive lifestyle that contrasts with their ancient nomadic and active lifestyle. Most of the Bushmen were forced into a lifestyle of passivity. Pray that people will be delivered from this dependency. Pray that negative behavior patterns that results from the abuse of alcohol will be broken.

* Unemployment is a growing problem. Pray for existing income generating projects to be successful and sustainable and for the Bushmen to utilize these opportunities to their full benefit and well being. Manufacturing creates wealth even in rural communities. Pray that they will be able to transfer their age old skills into craft making skills. Pray for initiatives like the Living Museum of the Bushmen to grow and to be sustainable. Pray for those that are employed on commercial farms and in game reserves to be treated with dignity.

* TB, Malaria and HIV/Aids is prevalent in almost all Bushmen communities, and is on the increase. Malaria is limited to only some Bushmen communities. Pray for the effective service delivery to people with HIV/Aids, TB and malaria as well as for the education and prevention programmes which are taking place. Pray that the people will grasp the importance of what they learn in these programmes and start implementing the practical guidelines they receive. Pray for the sick and dying. Pray for those looking after them, often deep in the bush.

* School attendance is poor amongst Bushman children. This results from poor parental guidance and control as well as abuse by children from other ethnic groups. The smaller sized Bushmen are an easy target . Pray that parents will take up their responsibilities and that they will understand and discover their role as parents. Pray for the restoration of strong family values that were traditionally a cornerstone of their culture. Bushmen children are submitted to a process of assimilation into mainstream education in all the countries that they found themselves in. This is often with great difficulty and resistance. Apart from one community at Tsumke first language education does not exist for them. Education is key to the future of any nation or ethnic group. Pray that the Bushmen will be able to adapt to these challenges, and that they will be able to benefit from existing education opportunities.

* The Bushmen are often victimized by other ethnic groups that “invade” their community and land, without any respect for them. Stock theft also occurs as other groups steal from them. Efforts by Bushman community leaders are often falling on deaf ears. Pray that other ethnic groups will respect the Bushmen, their land and their property and that they will not be seen as outcasts by society. Pray that the Bushmen will have favor with Government and other organizations which render assistance to them.

* The Bushmen are very dependent on handouts and sometimes believe the world owes them something. This prevents them from discovering and developing their own potential and skills. Pray that a sense of self worth and pride will be restored and that they will understand that they need to, and that they can, shape their own future.

* Pray for the Christian believers amongst the Ju/'hoansi Bushmen and other Bushmen groups, that they will grow in Christ and be able to withstand the temptations of everyday life. Pray that they will be able to discern the perfect will of God for their lives and that they will discern what is wrong and right. Pray that they will become witnesses in their own communities.

* Pray for the many Christian ministries and humanitarian aid agencies that works amongst the Bushmen. One of them is DEGNOS in Grootfontein in Namibia. DEGNOS is a Service and Witness centre of the Dutch Reformed Church in the North Eastern part of Namibia that trains, and works amongst the Ju/’hoansi Bushmen, as well as amongst the other Bushman groups in the North Eastern parts of Namibia. Ministering to the Bushmen requires ministries to travel vast distances that makes it very costly. Pray for resources for these ministries that will enable them to fulfill their missions.

* Pray for the Bushmen of the Central kalahari Game Reserve that have been resettled during the 80's. Some of them have returned but the majority find themselves in deplorable conditions in communities where there is no outlook whatsoever for a brighter future.
Guidelines from God's Word for Prayer for the Bushmen

Titus 3:3-7: v3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. v4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, v5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, v6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, v7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. (From the NIV Translation)
